President Obama To Mark Veterans Day In Alaska

UPDATE: The President’s visit to Elmendorf has been rescheduled for Thursday, Nov 12. He will arrive in Tokyo on Nov 13.

President Obama will make his first-ever visit to Alaska next Wednesday, to mark Veterans Day at Elmendorf Air Force Base. The president will stop in Anchorage as Air Force One is refueled on its way to conferences in Asia.

While in Alaska, he’ll mark the Veterans Day holiday with military personnel at the base, the White House said. His stopover in Alaska will come after the White House Veterans Day breakfast, which he will attend with Mrs. Obama. Later, he will participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The White House described the Elmendorf stop as “an event with the men and women of our Armed Forces,” and said that more details would be released in the coming days.

It is the president’s first trip ever to Alaska, and he made reference to a desire to travel to the state during the recent Native American Conference at the White House. While he said he would like to visit during the summer season, trips by past presidents have usually occurred during travel to Asia. The stop-over is part of a multi-day journey to Japan, China, South Korea and Singapore.
